There are four things holding rugby back in Australia. Each of these can be solved quite quickly and will make a significant improvement to rugby from a players, administrators and spectators point of view in the long term: the bench, the grassroots, the breakdown and the promotion of the game.

The Bench:
Last weekend’s Super 14 round contained three upsets. The Crusaders squeaked a draw against the previously out of sorts Hurricanes; The Blues, coming off a loss, and without the benefit of a jet lagged opponent, comprehensively beat the front running Bulls; The Force belatedly opened their account with a win against the well credentialed Stormers.

In the Waratahs game, with four tries in the bag after 46 minutes, they deployed their bench. The game stalled and the spectacle suffered as they managed just one more try in the remaining 34 minutes against a completely routed opponent.
